This is a magazine cover I created for my digital media class. The dancer featured is Kherington Payne, who was on So You Think You Can Dance during the summer 2008 season.  I was fortunate enough to see the So You Think You Can Dance tour when they came to Charlotte, NC in November 2008 and this picture is from one of my favorite dances.

The photographer I chose as at point of interest was renowned Austrian photographer, Lukas Beck.  Described as an art, documentary, and portrait photography, Beck utilizes color, angles, and light to capture his subjects and create riveting and eye-catching photos.  Beck’s main focus through photography is man and human nature, which is illustrated throughout his work.  Along with his use of capturing moments at odd angles and using light and playfulness in portraits, Lukas Beck give his photos a whole look uniquely to him, which I find really interesting and different.

Initially, the thing that caught my eye was Beck’s interest in music and theater.  Being a dancer myself, I enjoy photos with a lot of movement and expression exhibited.  After studying more of Beck’s work, I began to notice the true gift he has for capturing some of life’s most raw emotions, everyday feelings, and special moments that make a person’s everyday life.  The vibrancy of the color in his pictures, along with the untraditional angles give a whole new perspective on certain events that some people never take notice to, like an old man laughing after he fell at a wedding, or a mother and daughter whispering quietly to one another at an event.  His pictures of a bunch of young teenage boys playing soccer outside really captured the fun and lightness of the game, even though it is traditionally a more aggressive sport.

I can appreciate many different types of photography, but I love ones that express a specific human emotion, everyday feelings, and moments of people doing what they love and enjoying it.  I feel that so many times black and white photography is used for expressing human emotion and in portraits, which is why I liked Lukas Beck’s work because it was out of the ordinary, yet still worked and captured all the special emotions of the moment.
